I continued to urge that each case should be dealt with as it arose on its own merits, adding that the Chinese aatborities might always rely upon the friendly consideration of His Majesty's Minister. On the 4th instant, three days after this interview, the Viceroy's Secretary precqu communicated to me in writing, by order of his Excellency, the fact that a ful Report on the situation had been called for from the Taotai at Wuchow. Meantime the Secretary informs me that, pending the arrival of this Report, the whole question 1905 remains in abeyance.
